Russia begins firing missiles over Ukraine

Last updated on February 13th, 2023 at 03:57 am

On Friday, Russia pounded Ukraine with a barrage of missile attacks. There were blackouts because important infrastructural facilities were damaged.

According to the town’s acting mayor, Zaporizhzhia, which is home to Europe’s largest nuclear reactor, was struck by 17 missiles in a single hour.

All around the nation, air raid sirens were audible. When they heard sirens, folks were advised to take shelter and pay heed to the sirens.

The bombings on Friday occur just days before the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Additionally, the attacks come after recent trips by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to London, Paris, and Brussels, where he spoke with European leaders and requested fighter jets to assist Ukraine to fend off the Russian invasion.

Although the United States, Germany, and other NATO allies have promised Ukraine armour, Ukraine does not currently have enough tanks to mount a counteroffensive against Russia.

In Bakhmut, Ukraine, on February 9, 2023, a member of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine is at work.

Russian forces “have likely made tactical gains,” according to the British Defense Ministry, in two crucial areas of Ukraine: the western and northern edges of the town of Vuhledar and the northern outskirts of the Donbas town of Bakhmut.

Russian forces have reportedly advanced around that western side of the town, according to a British intelligence report that was shared on Twitter.

According to the ministry, in the northern outskirts of Bakhmut, fighters from the Wagner Group have advanced two to three kilometres farther west, taking control of the region close to the major road into town.

However, the article said that due to “inexperienced units” stationed there, Russia has probably sustained significant casualties. The ministry claimed that following a failed attack, Russian troops “likely retreated and abandoned at least 30 mostly intact armoured vehicles in a single incident.”

In the meanwhile, starting in March, Russia will reduce its oil production by 500,000 barrels per month, according to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western nations have set a limit on Russian crude oil prices.

As of right now, we have completely sold all of our crude production, but as we have previously mentioned, we won’t sell oil to anyone who directly or indirectly supports the “price ceiling.”

There was some uncertainty regarding whether Russia had discussed the impending production cut with OPEC+ members. Russia has consulted with several OPEC+ members, according to a Kremlin spokeswoman. However, Novak later claimed that there had been no consultations over the voluntary cut.

The decrease in Russian oil production might be a sign that the West’s price ceiling on Russian oil, together with other sanctions, are having an effect on Russia’s economy.

Zelenskyy will speak to a gathering of sports ministers on Friday in an effort to win their support for his campaign to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

The competitors must compete without carrying their country flags, according to the International Olympic Committee.
