In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has played a pivotal role in mediating a new prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine. The successful swap, the second within a month, saw the return of almost 400 prisoners of war, marking a positive step towards resolving the ongoing conflict in the region.
The exchange, confirmed by both Russian and Ukrainian authorities, took place on Wednesday, with each side receiving approximately 195 returned soldiers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a total of 207 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians had been successfully repatriated. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hailed the success of its mediation efforts, emphasizing the country’s role as a reliable international partner.
In an official statement, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the nation’s commitment to fostering a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The ministry highlighted the UAE’s global standing as a trusted mediator and expressed the country’s dedication to diplomatic initiatives, dialogue, and de-escalation.
The Russian Defence Ministry announced that the released military personnel would be transported to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation. All the repatriated individuals are to receive necessary medical and psychological assistance, ensuring their well-being after their release. Moscow also extended its gratitude to the UAE for its instrumental role in facilitating the negotiations, acknowledging the Emirates’ commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy took to social media, stating, “Our people are back. 207 of them. We return them home no matter what. We remember every Ukrainian in captivity, both warriors and civilians. We must bring all of them back.” The sentiment reflects the Ukrainian government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safe return of its citizens held in captivity.
This latest exchange follows a previous swap earlier in the month, where 248 prisoners were returned to Russia, and 230 Ukrainians were repatriated. The intricate nature of these deals underscores the complexity of the 22-month conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with the UAE emerging as a key mediator committed to facilitating dialogue and reconciliation.
The successful mediation efforts by the UAE demonstrate the country’s diplomatic prowess and commitment to fostering global peace. As the international community welcomes this positive development, hopes rise for further dialogue and negotiations that could lead to a lasting resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
