New Study Shows GPT-4 Finally Outscoring Humans on Standard Originality Tests

The University of Montana has published a groundbreaking study indicating that GPT-4 is currently able to perform better on the standardized creativity tests compared to the majority of humans. Led by Dr. Erik Guzik, the research team administered the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT)—the gold standard for measuring creative output—to the AI model. The scores were shocking: GPT-4 was ranked 1-percentile on originality and fluency on the test. This marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of generative AI, moving it from a tool of mere replication to one capable of displaying genuine divergent thinking that rivals human innovation.

Shattering the Ceiling of AI Creativity

Completely, historically, AI has been weak with the originality aspect of creativity tests, as it frequently has been speedy but lacks the ability to generate something entirely novel. This new research nullifies such an assumption. The AI did not simply repeat the available information when they were asked to find new applications of a product or visualize the outcomes of hypothetical situations. It demonstrated a level of AI Creativity that generated unique, unexpected solutions, placing it in the “elite” percentile. This transition implies that machine capability to form the relationship between unrelated ideas is becoming indistinguishable with the upper-level human imagination.

Redefining Creative Potential in Education

The consequence of this regarding the workforce and education is far-reaching. The research claims that the human educator should change his/her role as machines have become the highest percentile scorers in terms of creative potential. Instead of learning to produce simple concepts, the curriculum can be required to change its focus to curating and synthesizing- allowing students to learn how to sift through the enormous quantity of original ideas that can be produced by AI.
