netanyahu's gaza proposal a bold move or provocative action (1)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put forward a controversial proposal to maintain significant military control over the Gaza Strip following the recent conflict with Hamas. The plan, submitted to his security cabinet for approval, includes measures to establish a buffer zone and retain a strong military presence in the territory.
According to Netanyahu’s proposal, Gaza would be governed by local officials who are not associated with entities supporting terrorism and would not receive funding from such sources. The plan also outlines the construction of a buffer zone in northern Gaza, with continued Israeli presence in the southern part of the enclave.
Netanyahu’s vision for Gaza stands in stark contrast to the Biden administration‘s stance, which advocates for a two-state solution with the Palestinian Authority governing the territory before the establishment of a unified Palestinian state. The Biden administration opposes any unilateral actions by Israel that would change the status quo in Gaza, including the imposition of a buffer zone.
Palestinian leaders have swiftly rejected Netanyahu’s proposal, condemning it as a de facto reoccupation of Gaza and an attempt to alter its geographic and political landscape.
In other developments, the Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, has reported that over 29,500 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed since the start of the conflict. Israeli airstrikes overnight in the city of Rafah resulted in dozens of additional casualties, according to the ministry.
Meanwhile, Israel has announced plans to construct thousands of new homes in settlements across the West Bank in response to a recent shooting incident near a settlement. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed plans for 3,300 new homes, emphasizing that such attacks will only lead to further Israeli expansion in the region.
The international community and Palestinian authorities have condemned Israel’s settlement activities, considering them illegal and detrimental to the prospects of peace in the region.
