Mum fears son spoiled by grandparents won’t survive adult life

A fed-up mother in China who recently posted online her fear that her 10-year-old son won’t cope as an adult after being spoiled by his grandparents has struck a chord with several internet users in mainland China.

The unidentified mother from eastern China’s Shandong province says her child has become lazy and demanding after spending the recent winter holidays with his paternal grandparents.

A video posted online shows the kid’s grandfather putting a jacket on him as he lays motionless on the floor offering no help while his grandmother tries to put pants on him.

Star Video reported, the boy’s grandparents overindulged him in everything, according to the mother, and he had returned home no longer ready to even feed himself.

It all started at the beginning of the winter break when the kid went to stay with his paternal grandparents for a number of weeks, said the mother, adding she was shocked at what she found when she showed up to collect her son. The boy had yet to complete any of his homework. He had spent most of his time there watching television or using his tablet.

“Should I be happy that many people love him, beat him up, or turn a blind eye to the problem?”, the mother asked.

She was even more shocked to find her son rarely cared to speak, as his grandparents met any demands he made by reading his eye movements and facial expressions.

A number of parents in mainland China were able to resonate with the story. One internet user wrote, “when I asked my 8-year-old son to wash dishes, my mother-in-law argued with me about it.” Another user expressed reluctance about giving their children to their grandparents.

Colourful stories of Chinese parents and grandparents spoiling their children often make headlines in the country. Last August, a father spent a whopping $300,000 indulging his son’s hobby of collecting Ultraman trading cards.
