Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that mass layoffs are the first step toward closing the Education Department. This move is part of President Trump’s plan, as he promised during his campaign. McMahon told Fox News that the president has directed her to shut down the department.
On Tuesday, the Education Department laid off 1,315 staff members. This means nearly half of its workforce has been cut. Now, only about 2,183 employees remain. McMahon said the cuts were made to remove bureaucratic bloat and save money. She stressed that this is the first step in a long process to make the department leaner.
The layoffs will not affect key services. Programs like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, student support, services for students with disabilities, civil rights investigations, and state funding will continue without interruption. McMahon explained that they made sure to keep all the right people for these important tasks.
Staff were asked to leave their offices by 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the offices will be closed on Wednesday for security reasons. In a memo sent out after her confirmation, McMahon warned workers about the upcoming layoffs. She said that cutting red tape and unnecessary jobs will help parents make better educational choices for their children.
McMahon said that the government is not ending education. President Trump might soon order the department to close completely. Stay tuned for updates!
