MAGA Backlash Erupts Over Ramaswamy and Musk's H-1B Visa Proposal
Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, are becoming targets of MAGA supporter’s disdain because of the changes they seek to make to the H-1B visa program. Their positions on raising visas for foreign workers as co-chairs of Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency has divided Republicans.
Ramaswamy wants a radical change in H-1B system to replace the current lottery based system through merit based system. Ramaswamy, having been the CEO of Roivant Sciences before postinghis message, used H-1B workers and finds the program’s current provision of employers exclusive monstrosity to be at its best.
According to the American Immigration Council, the workers applying for the H-1B visa got a median salary of $108,000 in 2021, whereas the average wage earner in the United States made $45,760 in the same year. However, MAGA loyalists argue that even high skilled immigrants are a threat to jobs in America which presents a division within Trump’s supporters.
