Live Updates: Gulf Coast Braces for Unprecedented Snowstorm, Airport Closures, and Emergency Alerts

A big winter storm is crossing the Gulf Coast causing record-breaking snowfall and widespread disruptions. The storm which began impacting the region on Tuesday has brought heavy snow, sleet, and ice, making conditions extremely dangerous for travelers and residents. The winter weather a rare event for the Gulf Coast is expected to continue affecting parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and up the Carolina coast into Wednesday, with temperatures plunging far below average.

Record Snowfall Across the Gulf Coast:

New Orleans recorded a daily snowfall record of 8 inches. This heavy snowfall in the region is breaking its previous record of 2.7 inches. 

Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida cities are also witnessing heavy snowfall.

Major Airport Disruptions:

Because of bad weather, heavy snowfall, and storms travelers are facing difficulties. 

More than 1,200 flights have been canceled due to the storm, FlightAware reported. Airports in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi are impacted badly. Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airports, and New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong Airport were hit hardest. 

Airport authorities announced that all flights will be canceled until the weather conditions improve.

Emergency Alerts and Travel Warnings:

Over 25 million people are currently facing winter weather warnings across the South and East Coast. 

The National Weather Service has issued advisories for dangerous, life-threatening travel conditions.  Houston and Atlanta are under extreme cold and ice warnings. The National Weather Service has warned of another freeze overnight, which could lead to further hazardous road conditions.

According to the advisories, the snowfall across Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia could range from 2 to 6 inches. In Florida snowfall and ice are expected to accumulate, with conditions worsening overnight into Thursday.
