Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Seeks UK Asylum, Temporarily Stays in India

According to a report by the Daily Sun, India will provide logistical support to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while she seeks asylum in the UK.

On Monday, the government of Bangladesh collapsed, and Hasina fled from the country. Sheikh Hasina has been granted a temporary stay in India. The Indian government has approved her stay on a short-term basis as she awaits relocation to the UK.

Hasina, who stepped down on Monday amid massive anti-government protests, is currently en route to London via India. But there has been no official confirmation from the UK government regarding her request for political asylum, as reported by Daily Sun.

Hasina is being accompanied by her sister Rehana who is a UK citizen during this period of unrest. Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the “Father of Bangladesh,” and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina. Rehana’s daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a member of the British Parliament for the Labour Party.

Indian government sources have indicated that New Delhi is closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation in Dhaka. In Dhaka, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced that Hasina had resigned and that an interim government is now assuming control.
