Why Fajr Times Differ by City
• Geography (Latitude & Latitude): The difference in longitude indicates that sunrise and dawn occurs at different times across the country. Dawn is visible in places further west rather than those in the east. Also, the twilight times, especially in summer or winter, can be affected by places being farther north in latitude.
• Elevation & Local Terrain: The visible light of dawn in some areas can be delayed by mountains, hills, or other obstructions.
• Calculation Method: The beginning of Fajr is determined by different Islamic authorities or apps. They use slightly different angles for “astronomical twilight”. The most common methods in the U.S. include the ISNA method, or others using ~ 15 degrees below the horizon for “true dawn”. These few minutes’ variation can lead to small differences.
• Time Zone Differences & Daylight Saving Time: Observed clock timings are affected.

Significance & Practical Tips
• Fajr determines the first of the five daily obligatory prayers in Islam. It commences at dawn (when the first light appears in the sky, before sunrise) and concludes at sunrise.
• It is often considered spiritually very important, as praying at dawn is given special emphasis in many hadiths.
• It is important to know the exact time for Muslims, especially during Ramadan, for ending the fast (if one is observing) or for beginning the fast (for pre-sunrise meals).
• It is best to use a reliable local source (mosque, trusted prayer-time app, Islamic center) rather than relying on static schedules owing to changes in daily timings (dawn shifts with the Earth’s tilt around the sun).
