Miramar residents expressed their concerns at a town hall meeting about the possibility of a new incinerator being built near their city. This follows the need for a new facility after the previous incinerator in Doral burned down last year.
The proposed sites include Medley, Opa-Locka West Airport, a location off West Okeechobee Road, and the original Doral site. However, residents of Miramar are particularly worried about the West Airport location being too close to their homes.
Mayor Wayne Messam said in his quote that “We are concerned for our safety and health”. “The site is too close to thousands of homes, and we fear for our water supply.”
Doral residents who experienced the fire last year said it’s clear they don’t want the incinerator rebuilt in their community.
Miami-Dade County commissioners have pushed the decision on the new location to November 6. Earlier this month, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava proposed the West Airport site but also stressed the need to explore alternatives, such as composting and carbon capture, for managing waste.
