United Efforts to Counter Extremist Ideologies and Promote Peaceful Coexistence

Extremist ideologies are still a serious challenge to peace, coexistence, and the values of true faith, all around the globe. Thousands of youths have been deceived, manipulated and thrust into violent conflicts in the name of religion in recent years. These misleading interpretations not only damage the image of Islam but also disintegrate societies and promote suspicion all over the world. In this article, the author tries to create awareness about the perils of extremist thinking, shedding light on the plight of the exploited youth and showing how tolerance, justice, and compassion are the pillars of Islam and humanity.

The Distortion of Religion and the Exploitation of Youth

The misuse of religion by extremist groups has been going on since time immemorial to deliver political or personal gains at the expense of some of the things that Islam promotes mercy, justice, and tolerance. These sects misuse holy doctrine into manipulation instruments, and sway the weak ones, more so the young people, that division and killing of people is part of a divine plan. As a matter of fact, all these acts are totally inconsistent with the moral and humanitarian nature of Islam.

Young individuals who are disillusioned by their socioeconomic circumstances or those who are seeking a sense of purpose easily fall victims of extremist recruiting officers. They are entangled in outer struggles which are not related to their religion or its good principles. These youths suffer, become isolated, and suffer an irreparable trauma once they are involved. Their future is being ruined by the fact that the religion is used to attract them into violence, which in turn damages the way the rest of the world sees Muslims in general.

The fact that young minds are being exploited to serve the extremist causes is a demonstration that there is a dire need to educate them, create awareness, and guide them through compassionate means. The societies should join hands to ensure that the youth are not manipulated with ideologies and given false hopes and knowledge based on the authentic Islamic teachings.

Restoring the True Image of Islam and Promoting Peace

The real Islam promotes co-existence, kindness, and respect among all human beings and religions. Misrepresenting these teachings, however, is carried out by extremist groups and they bring division and hatred. They are not representative of the world Muslim community and neither do they mirror it. They have done this by giving a false story in which they make Islam look intolerant or violent. The truth is that Islam is a peaceful religion, which is constructed on the principles of justice, charity, and comprehension.

Mass media and mass protests in Europe and other parts of the world have shown the general condemnation of extremism and violence in the name of religion. These movements stress on unity, interfaith discussion, and protection of common moral values of humankind. The Muslim and non-Muslim groups are coming together in support of each other to restate that faith cannot be characterized by extremism ideologies regardless of the disguise.

Fighting extremism is also to provide justice to those who promote hate, encourage violence or use charitable and political resources to achieve destructive purposes. To a large extent, governments and civil societies are realizing the need to interrupt extremist funding, limit the travel of extremist leaders, and empower education systems to help instill tolerance and critical thinking to the youth.

Most importantly, it should focus on helping the victims, who are the victims of extremist violence whose lives and families are broken. Their experiences are a reminder to the whole world that there is pain behind all twisted ideologies and that the only faith is one that heals and not harm.
