Clemson Football’s Big Move: Wes Goodwin Steps Down as Defensive Coordinator
The head coach of Clemson Dabo Swinney has chosen to part ways with defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin. Many sources confirmed the news that Goodwin won’t be leading the Tigers’ defense in 2025.
Goodwin took over in 2022 after Brent Venables left for Oklahoma. However, Clemson’s defense had a tough time in 2024, struggling in key areas:
The Tigers also allowed too many big plays, with 73 plays of 20+ yards, one of the highest in the nation.
This season’s run defense was Clemson’s weakest since 1975. The team struggled to stop balanced offenses and failed to control the edge, which led to critical mistakes in key games.
Goodwin has earned $1.4 million annually. He is already being linked to a coaching role at Oklahoma.
Coach Swinney is also expected to bring new defensive leadership to get Clemson back on track in 2025. Fans and players are hopeful for a stronger, more consistent defense in the upcoming season.
