Barack and Michelle Obama Rally Behind Kamala Harris, Slam Trump at Democratic National Convention

Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered compelling speeches at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where they voiced strong support for Kamala Harris, who is on the path to becoming the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s presidential nomination.

Barack Obama, welcomed with enthusiastic applause, opened his speech by expressing his happiness to be back in Chicago. He reflected on the spirit of his 2008 campaign, reigniting the crowd with his classic line, “I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling fired up and ready to go!”

Looking back, Obama praised his decision to choose Joe Biden as his vice president, highlighting Biden’s empathy and decency as essential qualities for a leader. He spoke fondly of their partnership, emphasizing that, despite their different backgrounds, they became like brothers.

Turning his attention to Donald Trump, Obama criticized the former president for his divisive rhetoric and his constant complaints. He likened Trump to a “neighbor who keeps running his leaf blower outside your window,” but noted that, from a president, this behavior is dangerous. Obama warned against another term of chaos under Trump, stressing that America doesn’t need more division.

Michelle Obama also delivered a fierce critique of Trump, accusing him of promoting fear and division. She spoke passionately about Kamala Harris, drawing parallels between their lives and values. Michelle emphasized that Harris is more than ready to lead, having been raised with a strong sense of justice instilled by her immigrant mother. Both Obamas expressed their confidence that Harris is prepared to serve as president, with Barack Obama reworking his famous slogan to declare, “Yes, she can.”
