Apple has released an alert for iPhone users after a recent cyberattack that has compromised over a billion devices. Hackers are using different techniques such as impersonating Apple employees to steal personal information like passwords, security codes, and financial details.
Apple is urging iPhone users to be cautious of various forms of phishing attacks, including:
– Phishing Emails: Emails that attempt to steal information or money.
– Fake Pop-Up Ads: Deceptive ads that trick users into providing personal information.
– Unexpected Calendar Invites: Scammers use calendar invites to gain access to your information.
– Scam Phone Calls: Calls from individuals impersonating Apple support.
The company said that Apple support will never ask users to sign in via a website link, nor will they request passwords or two-factor authentication codes.
To protect against cyberattacks Apple recommends that iPhone users activate two-factor authentication (2FA).
Apple advises users to be cautious of calls appearing to come from legitimate numbers but are from scammers. These callers may use personal details, such as your home address, workplace, or social security number, to build trust.
Scammers may also ask users to disable security features like two-factor authentication or Stolen Device Protection, claiming it is necessary to stop an attack or regain control of an account. Apple warns that this is a trick to lower your security defenses for the attackers’ benefit.
Apple provides the following tips to avoid these scams:
– Verify Sender Details: Check the sender’s email or phone number with the official details of Apple. Be cautious of email addresses that differ from the official Apple ones.
– Scrutinize Links: Ensure that links in messages lead to Apple’s official website.
– Report Suspicious Activity: If you receive a suspicious call immediately contact Apple directly to verify any notifications. Report scam calls to the US Federal Trade Commission or local law enforcement agencies.
By following these guidelines, iPhone users can better protect themselves from cyberattacks.
