800 NOAA Employees Laid Off—What It Means for Climate & Disaster Forecasting in U.S.

According to sources familiar with the agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has laid off around 800 employees, and more terminations are expected by Friday.

This layoff will impact multiple divisions, including weather, climate, and environmental research. According to the sources probationary employees, those with a year or less on the job will be most impacted in this round of layoff. Apart from this some critical positions, such as disaster forecasting roles can be in danger.

These layoffs come coming at a time when extreme weather is increasing, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other climate events can happen anytime. So, strong prediction centres are mandatory.

The National Weather Service union is working to support affected employees, some of whom are exploring legal action. Many received termination letters stating they were not a “fit” for the agency’s current needs.

Critics warn that these cuts is a part of the Project 2025 initiative this could weaken the U.S.’s ability to monitor and forecast dangerous weather events. The layoffs have sparked a backlash from scientists and meteorologists who argue that reducing NOAA’s workforce will have long-term consequences for public safety.

Stay tuned for further updates.
