These layoffs come coming at a time when extreme weather is increasing, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other climate events can happen anytime. So, strong prediction centres are mandatory.

The National Weather Service union is working to support affected employees, some of whom are exploring legal action. Many received termination letters stating they were not a “fit” for the agency’s current needs.

Critics warn that these cuts is a part of the Project 2025 initiative this could weaken the U.S.’s ability to monitor and forecast dangerous weather events.
