The Drama Review – Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s Controversial Wedding Film Delivers on Its Promise

The Drama, in a world full of lovey-dovey clichés and cookie-cutter scripts, is definitely not your typical movie. This much-hyped wedding film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson delivers all that it promised, an emotionally charged ride with an uncomfortable take on what happens in real life when two people fall in love.

A Wedding Film That Refuses to Be Comfortable

While The Drama might look like another wedding movie on the surface, it is not about celebrating a happy occasion. Instead, it is really about analysing the emotional rollercoaster leading up to that day. It is about two people trying to figure out how to be happy together and how to deal with their own problems such as love, ego, insecurity and unresolved issues with each other. The audience does not experience romance through out the film; they experience tension. The audience does not witness a couple making vows; they witness a couple being vulnerable with each other.

Performances That Carry the Film

Zendaya’s performance was outstanding. She had so much depth to her character, portraying a strong, yet emotionally fragile woman who was both relatable and unpredictable to the audience. Pattinson also gave a very powerful performance. He portrayed a character who was very reserved, but as the film progressed, he became increasingly more intense, especially when he confronted someone.

Why It’s Being Called “Controversial”

This film is controversial in its approach to representing the realities of relationships, and this has generated much discussion.

The Drama does not idealise love but presents it as:

  • imperfect
  • unresolved
  • sometimes uncomfortable to watch

Direction and Tone

The film’s direction is minimalistic, with an emphasis on tension building, accomplished through the use of long silences, close-up shots, and sharp dialogue, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. Unlike many films, there is no dramatic score that will direct the viewer’s emotions; rather, the viewer is presented with genuine interactions as the characters experience discomfort.

What Works

  • Performances by each of the leads are persuasive and nuanced
  • Writing is realistic and emotionally charged
  • A significant departure from traditional romantic storytelling
  • The storyline is concise and focused

What May Not Work for Everyone

  • Certain scenes have slow pacing
  • Scenes with very emotional content may be heavy
  • There are few traditional “feel-good” moments

This film does not give the viewer an escape; rather, this film requires the viewer to self-reflect.

Final Verdict

The Drama provides the viewer with what was promised: an uncomfortable, human story that prompts the viewer to rethink love in relation to the relationship. If you want a traditional romantic film, this is not your film. However, if you want to see something authentic and raw, then The Drama is worthwhile.
