American diplomats are again glued to high-level talks with Ukrainians in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, a new opening following a White House meeting between the head of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and American leaders.
The talks’ proceedings will take place at a critical time in Jeddah, a renowned city within Saudi Arabia, under the Red Sea, because there’s still a cloud of tension between Kyiv and Washington.
Although no official reason was given, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry stated that Jeddah, rather than Riyadh, would host the meeting. Rather, the kingdom is starting to improve its role in international mediation, conducting key conferences on improving tensions in conflicts like Sudan and Gaza beginning today. A statement from the ministry reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to facilitating dialogue on the Ukraine issue.
The US delegation would be headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who would reportedly hold discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Beside President Zelenskyy are Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, among other senior officials.
Zelenskyy has postponed the visit to Saudi Arabia until now, as he has to meet with some diplomats in the UAE. This would, according to him, mark a very big step in getting stronger global support.
A string of tense meetings at the White House on February 28 between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance preceded the trip. At that meeting, Trump was reportedly alleged to have warned Zelenskyy to his face, saying, “You are gambling with World War III, and what you are doing is very disrespectful to the country.”
That meeting ended without Ukraine delivering what had been a hoped-for deal that would have allowed American military hardware to acquire access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.
Trump’s war-of-words jabs with the EU, especially in pooling military aid, limiting intelligence access with Kyiv, and forging more direct ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, have sent shock waves across European leaders regarding the general interest around the Ukraine war. To counter Trump’s apparent degrading of all European strategic-economic military fronts, the EU is fast-forwarding plans toward a more independent defense strategy, parity independence in security guarantees vis-à-vis the United States.
But as per future talks, there seems to be an optimistic Trump. He spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One, saying, “I think you’re going to see some good results coming out of Saudi Arabia this week.
America’s military support during this war with Russia is critical for Ukraine. Tuesday’s discussion focused on the proposed minerals exchange and wider security cooperation. Their results could influence Ukrainian war efforts enormously and the future of Western support for years to come.
