Whitehall Trash Truck Explosion Highlights Dangers of Improper Waste Disposal
A garbage truck explosion in Whitehall nearly injured two workers after an oxygen tank, illegally disposed of in household trash, ignited inside the truck. The incident happened on the 4000 block of Elbern Avenue, sending debris flying and starting a fire.
Surveillance footage released by the City of Whitehall shows the explosion occurring during routine trash pickup. One worker was directly in front of the truck, while another was on the side. Fortunately, both escaped unharmed, and the fire was quickly put out.
Whitehall police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information to call 614-237-6333.
Pressurized containers like oxygen tanks should never be thrown in regular trash, as they can explode under pressure. Hazardous materials—including motor oil, car batteries, and household chemicals—require special disposal to prevent fires, injuries, and environmental damage.
Residents can use the Ohio EPA’s recycling directory to find correct disposal locations. These are based on their city or zip code.
To avoid these kinds of accidents always follow the rules for throwing away hazardous waste. Make sure to recycle or dispose of items in the right way. These simple steps will help keep workers and the community safe.
