What is a Musketeer? What is the Blue Blob? Xavier University’s Mascots Revealed

Xavier University’s basketball team is back in the NCAA tournament. And if you are someone new at Xavier then it is a question for you that who are their mascots?

Let’s start with D’Artagnan the Musketeer. A musketeer was a soldier with a musket — a type of old, large gun. The term became popular because of the famous novel The Three Musketeers, which told stories of brave men in France who stood for the motto, “All for one, one for all.”

D’Artagnan both a real historical figure and a character in the novel, inspired Xavier’s mascot. The school wanted someone who symbolized courage, loyalty, and their connection to French history. The idea of D’Artagnan became official in 1925, but he first appeared at a Xavier game in 1965.

Today up to four students take turns dressing as D’Artagnan. Over the years, the costume has changed, but the spirit remains the same — brave and proud.

The second mascot of Xavier is  the Blue Blob. Not every child loved the serious look of the Musketeer, so in 1985, Xavier created the Blue Blob as a fun, friendly mascot that kids would adore.

The Blue Blob is big, furry, and of course, bright blue. It has a goofy smile, hound-like eyes, and a funny, Muppet-style nose. The Blue Blob is known for silly antics — sometimes sticking out a two-foot-long tongue or pretending to eat things just to make the crowd laugh.

It even starred in a few SportsCenter commercials!

Together, D’Artagnan and the Blue Blob make Xavier games exciting for fans of all ages. One represents bravery and history, while the other brings fun and laughter to the court.

So next time you watch Xavier play, look out for both — they’re part of what makes the game special!
