What Happened At The US Open With Coco Gauff?

Coco Gauff overcame a 50-minute delay caused by climate protesters to win her semifinal match against Karolina Muchova and reach her first US Open final

Gauff was leading 6-4, 1-0 when the match was interrupted by four protesters wearing “End Fossil Fuels” t-shirts in the stands. 

Security swiftly removed three of the protesters, but the fourth had glued their feet to the floor, causing a longer delay. Eventually, the protester was taken away, and the players resumed their match.

Gauff went on to win the match 6-4, 7-5, securing her place in the final. She will face Aryna Sabalenka, the incoming world No. 1, in the championship match.

Reflecting on the interruption caused by the protesters, Gauff, 19, expressed her belief in climate change and the need to take action. 

She acknowledged that while she wanted the momentum to continue in her favor, she understood the protesters’ desire to have their voices heard and appreciated their peaceful approach.

Karolina Muchova initially thought the disturbance was fans cheering but later realized it was a protest. The players left the court during the delay, and Gauff practiced serves while Muchova called the trainer.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) confirmed that all four protesters were taken into custody by the New York Police Department (NYPD). 

The fourth protester had to be removed with assistance from medical personnel due to having their feet glued to the floor.

Coco Gauff, guided by her new coaching team, which includes former coach to Andy Murray, Brad Gilbert, has had a successful summer, winning significant singles titles in Washington and Cincinnati. This appearance marks her second major final.

Gauff secured the first set with a 6-4 lead and won the first game of the second set before the delay. Despite a resilient effort from Muchova, Gauff eventually won the match, overcoming multiple match points in a thrilling finish.

The US Open final featuring Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 9 pm UK time.

What was the protest for at the US Open?

During the US Open semifinal match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova, the game was interrupted for 50 minutes by climate protesters in the stands. One of the protesters even glued his feet to the floor. 

Despite the delay, Gauff managed to shake off the disruption and went on to defeat Muchova, securing her spot in the US Open final. 

The protesters were advocating for an end to the use of fossil fuels, and their actions caused a significant delay in the match.
