Vice President Harris Faces Criticism Over Delayed Hurricane Helene Response

Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris has been criticized for appearing to be indifferent to Hurricane Helene that recently occurred in Georgia. The most recent trip of Harris to Augusta was not a hit among all the people of the community, but she shared her moments on posting.

Late Response Sparks Debate

Harris used her social media platform to share her trip to the Georgia communities after Hurricane Helene. In her post, she said, “For the last few days, the southeast region has seen the violence and the aftermath.” The Vice President mentioned that they talk to the people who have been impacted by the disaster and receive updates from the rescuers.

However many of the online critics stated that she should have said this much earlier. Facebook and Twitter users complained that she should have come earlier to offer a helping hand.

Federal Aid Response

Similar to this, President Biden has recently approved Governor Brian Kemp’s request for full reimbursement for the local cost incurred for the cleanup. Another benefit that has been provided to qualified applicants is a $750 grant from the federal emergency management agency FEMA. Some of the residents criticized saying this amount is not enough given the scale of loss they experienced in their households and neighborhoods.

When she was in Augusta, Harris listened to some families who were victims of the hurricane and got detailed reports from the emergency management teams who were on standby 24/7. She also assured the affected people that the federal government would continue to provide support in the post-disaster recovery exercise across the region. Several counties have disclosed considerable losses after being ravaged by these storms, and most of the affected people are now in the process of reconstructing their homes, which will take months or even years.

The Vice President also discussed the administration’s support for those positions saying, “We will do all that we can to assist the communities.” However, the response has drawn controversies concerning disaster response timing and adequacy of federal support.
