US Election: Biden's Handling Of The War In Gaza Could Cost Him A Key Swing State
Joe Biden’s support has dropped among Muslim and Arab Democrats in Michigan, a key group that overwhelmingly backed the President in the swing state in 2020, according to a new survey conducted by Lake Research Partners, a respected Democratic pollster.
It was commissioned by Detroit Action, a progressive advocacy group. The poll highlighted that Biden’s handling of the brutal war in the Middle East could cost him a state that he won by just 150,000 votes in 2020 and is home to an estimated 240,000 Muslims.
The survey reached 513 registered, likely democratic voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. About two-thirds of Arab and Muslim Democrats said they think they will vote to replace Biden, while three-quarters showed support for a third-party candidate.
The President’s “extremely poor performance among Arab, Muslim and young voters of his own party is … frightening,” said Waleed Shahid, a progressive strategist who has been active in the messaging fight around the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Still, the election is a year away, and the poll suggests Biden could win back the support of some Muslim and Arab voters and young Democrats by working harder to rein in Israel and doing more to support the innocent Palestinian civilians.
A majority of all Michigan Democrats surveyed said they supported a truce in the raging war. Overall, the respondents were divided on current plans for the US to send $14 billion in additional military aid to Israel, with a slight plurality supporting it.
It appears at the moment, voters may be judging the President on his own instead of against his rivals. For instance, Donald Trump recently revived his plans to bar a number of Muslims from entering the country. Keep an eye out for further updates.
