UN Highlights UAE’s Millions of Humanitarian Aid to Sudan

The United Nations has recently highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan where the situation has rapidly deteriorated to famine. Civilians are suffering from conflicts. Among the countries that stepped forward to assist the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has played a leading role and UAE has provided help to the crisis.

Global Response to Sudan’s Crisis

The international community has also responded to the Sudan crisis with various aids and humanitarian efforts. But because of bad situations, aid operations are facing many challenges including attacks on aid workers.

But in between many challenges, countries like the UAE have made significant contributions to support the Sudanese innocent people.

UAE’s Humanitarian Commitment

Recently the UAE has pledged $100 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan and rapidly allocated the $70 million of the fund.

This was announced during the Paris International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries in April 2024. The funds will be channeled through key UN agencies and humanitarian organizations working on the ground in Sudan, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Emergency Shelter: Providing safe havens for those displaced by the conflict.

Protection of Women: Addressing the unique vulnerabilities of women in crises.

This is not the first time the UAE has come forward to help Sudan. The UAE has previously provided $130 million in humanitarian aid and has established an air bridge to deliver 9,500 tons of food and medical supplies.

Apart from these UAE has also supported the refugee camps in Chad and South Sudan and shows a great commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region.

International Recognition and Call for Peace

UN officials have expressed profound gratitude for the UAE’s support to Sudan in hard time.

Martin Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, acknowledged the UAE’s $70 million contribution, emphasizing its crucial role in sustaining lifesaving operations in Sudan.

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, also praised the UAE for its generosity and proactive stance in addressing the crisis.

The UAE has not only provided financial and logistical support but has also called for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Apart from financial support UAE leaders also called for an immediate ceasefire in military operations in Sudan.
