The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science – National Center of Meteorology (UAEREP-NCM) has been at the forefront of cloud-seeding efforts for over two decades. In response to escalating water scarcity issues exacerbated by climate change and population growth, the UAE has intensified its focus on innovative solutions to optimize water resources.
Cloud seeding operates by introducing seeding agents, such as hygroscopic salt flares containing potassium chloride, into clouds with favorable updrafts. These agents enhance microphysical processes, leading to the enlargement of droplet sizes and subsequent precipitation. The UAE’s cloud-seeding program involves igniting hygroscopic flares released from specialized aircraft, a conventional yet effective approach.
Statistical experiments have demonstrated significant enhancements in rainfall, with precipitation potentially increasing by up to 15 percent in turbid atmospheres. Moreover, in clean atmospheres, the enhancement ratio could reach up to 25 percent. These findings underscore the efficacy of cloud seeding as a viable technique to augment annual rainfall and mitigate water scarcity challenges.
