UAE-Ukraine Ties Strengthen: Humanitarian Aid, Prisoner Returns, and Economic Cooperation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just awarded the Order of Princess Olga, First Class to UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy in, stating that she has been indispensable in supporting Ukraine during the ongoing war with Russia. The UAE has been a go-between in ensuring that Ukrainian prisoners are released, extensive humanitarian assistance is given to the families affected and there is establishment of economic relations with Ukraine. As part of her official visit, Al Hashimy organized a group to visit Kyiv to negotiate trade and investment projects as well as humanitarian assistance because the UAE has a desire to help Ukraine to be stable, recover, and develop in the long term.

Humanitarian Support and Prisoner Exchange Efforts

The UAE has been critical in helping Ukraine during the war between Russia and Ukraine. President Zelenskyy pointed to the stability of the UAE in ensuring that Ukrainians kept returning to the nation after being taken captive by the Russians, not to mention essential support to children and the families who had been affected throughout the war. This has so far seen an indication of the UAE involvement in freeing more than 4,600 prisoners using a 17-exchange mechanism.

The delegation of Al Hashimy paid a visit to Ukraine and observed humanitarian programs and foster family homes, psychosocial recovery centers, safe school initiatives, etc. The UAE has provided the required resources like ambulances, generators, and relief items that have saved over 1.2 million lives in Ukraine. These initiatives highlight the dual policy of providing immediate assistance and favoring the long-term recovery efforts also of the UAE.

Economic and Strategic Cooperation

On the visit, Al Hashimy held a meeting with President Zelenskyy and senior officials, such as Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President, to discuss energy-related, infrastructure-related, agricultural, and digital transformation investment. The meetings contributed to continuous partnerships established in 2013 in accordance with the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that was signed in February 2025 to enhance trade and investment between the UAE and Ukraine.

The future Ukrainian event, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, emphasized the future of Ukraine Month in January 2026 in Abu Dhabi, where Ukraine would not only demonstrate its potential but also persuade it to further cooperate with the country. International consolidation in the search of a just peace was also discussed whereby the UAE commitment towards stability, development, and security were discussed.

Commitment to Peace and Future Collaboration

The participation of the UAE goes beyond humanitarian assistance to involve the peacebuilding and diplomatic mediation. Al Hashimy emphasized a continuous dialogue and trust building program to help enhance peace. It also reflected the commitment of the UAE in developing economic partnerships with the host nation though preserving humanitarian aid as evidenced by the delegation which included the UAE Ambassador Salem Al Kaabi and other senior delegates.

This trip is a strategic foresight of a collective collaboration, economic growth, involvement of the private sector, and humanitarian aid as inseparable in support of sustainable growth and sustainability in Ukraine.
