The world is witnessing the emerging peacemaker – the UAE! Why are we saying this? There are many reasons behind the field of humanitarian aid, coming forward to help countries in need, and standing up for humanity, as the UAE called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and Ukraine and advocated a halt to military action in Sudan Crisis.  UAE’s quick steps, and assistance in dealing with severe natural disasters like floods in African countries. The UAE showed solidarity with countries beyond the borders.

Similarly, in its aim to promote harmony to establish peace, the UAE is mediating the prison swap between Russia and Ukraine, as there have been four rounds of successful swaps since January 2024. Now it has recently been announced that the UAE has played a key role in the release of 180 prisoners of war amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to the statement from UAE’s official website, this is the fifth time such a step has been taken by the UAE to help countries trapped in war.

Emphasizing its neutrality in the situation the UAE used its deep ties and trusted partnership with both countries of Ukraine and Russia to organize the exchange. This latest mediation is announced by the Emirati Foreign Ministry through WAM. After this once again commitment of the UAE to peacebuilding efforts in the region is making headlines in the world governments and media.

The Russian defense ministry also confirmed the return of 90 prisoners to each side as part of the negotiated swap.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the UAE’s intermediary role in this significant humanitarian gesture. He shared a post of his official X handle after the successful swap:

Since the commencement of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, the UAE has consistently maintained a diplomatic stance and actively pursued avenues for dialogue between the conflicting parties. Notably, the Emirates also brokered a similar prisoner swap between the United States and Russia in December 2022, further solidifying its role as a trusted mediator on the international stage.
