trump’s alcohol free lifestyle a spotlight on health risks of drinking
Dr. Vivek Murthy the U.S. Surgeon General has proposed adding cancer warnings to alcohol labels. In a recent report he added that alcohol use is linked to nearly 100,000 cancer cases and around 20,000 deaths every year.
Currently alcohol labels arries warning against drinking while pregnant, driving, or operating heavy machinery. These labels have not changed since 1988. Dr. Murthy believes it’s time for an update to include the risks of cancer.
Alcohol has been found to increase the chances of developing at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, colon, throat, and mouth cancers. Dr. Murthy recommended to add a clear warning labels to raise awareness.
Other countries like South Korea and Ireland already including cancer-specific warnings on alcohol. Ireland is also planing to introduce these cancer labels on alcohols next year.
What U.S. will do is still unclear, but there is a hope after the concerns from Dr. Murthy’s report.
In his suggestions there are highlights like public figures President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr., both stay away from alcohol.
The proposed label change of alcohol by Dr. Murthy is a step to inform people about the health risks linked with the alcohol. The awareness will helping them make safer choices for their well-being and health.
