tragedy on set diego borella dies emily in paris season 5
Diego Borella was a Venetian-born assistant director (locally hired as a third assistant director) working on the fifth season of Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris. Trained in Rome, London, and New York, Borella was known not only for his work in film but also for his background in visual arts and writing children’s stories. He was widely respected for his creative insight and professionalism.
On August 21, 2025, while filming at the historic Hotel Danieli in Venice, Borella collapsed suddenly during preparations for a final scene around 7:00 p.m. Medical staff on set attempted CPR, and emergency services responded promptly, but he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:30 p.m..
Borella had a distinguished and diverse creative background. Born in Venice, he pursued visual arts and literature alongside his film career. His colleagues remember him as a gentle soul and a skilled professional with a passion for storytelling and collaboration.
Although the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest that Borella likely suffered a sudden heart attack. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived and died at the scene.
Following the tragedy, production on Emily in Paris Season 5 was temporarily suspended. Filming resumed on August 23, just two days after Borella’s passing. The cast and crew returned to the set in Venice with visible emotional weight but also determination to honor their colleague by continuing the work he contributed to.
Paramount Television Studios expressed their condolences, calling Borella a valued member of the production family and extending sympathies to his loved ones.
Netflix has confirmed that Season 5 of Emily in Paris will still premiere on December 18, 2025, as previously scheduled.
