Everything About Tom Cruise Top Gun to the Upcoming Maverick’s Return Top Gun 3

Top Gun 3 is officially in the process of launch but there are no official dates released yet, so fans have to wait to watch Maverick return in Top Gun 3.

But the breathtaking news is that we won’t have to wait another 38 years. Bruckheimer said he might be busy for another Top Gun movie.

The sequel took about a year to film, so even if we calculate roughly that filming somehow begins this year, we probably won’t see it until at least 2026. But definitely, the wait will be worth it as we will see Tom Cruise on screen again with a lot of action!

Top Gun 3 Cast: Who Might Return?

Tom Cruise is set to return with his iconic role Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, though this time, he might take a step back to allow Miles Teller’s Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw to lead.

Teller has shown interest in coming back for Top Gun 3, stating in July 2022, “I’ve been having some conversations with him [Tom Cruise] about it. We’ll see. That would be great, but that’s all up to TC. It’s all up to Tom.”

Glen Powell has also confirmed his return as Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, shortly after the movie’s confirmation in January 2024.

Beyond these three, the returning cast is not clear and confirmed yet.

Jennifer Connelly could come back as Penny, given Maverick’s rekindled relationship with her, especially if the third film explores Maverick’s civilian life and step-fatherhood.

Other potential returns include the sequel’s Top Gun elites, like Lewis Pullman as Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd and Monica Barbaro as Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace.

Jon Hamm might return as Vice Admiral Beau ‘Cyclone’ Simpson. However, he told ScreenRant in May 2024 that he hasn’t had any official discussions yet: “I don’t think they’re going to be lighting into production anytime soon, but I would certainly love to be back.”

Val Kilmer’s Iceman won’t return since his character was killed off.

However, as Top Gun: Maverick tastefully used footage from the first film, there’s always a chance Kilmer—or other original cast members—could appear in flashbacks.

But a question is what could Top Gun 3 be about? There will be drama but what will be the story and plot is still unclear.

Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), Lieutenant Junior Grade Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, are U.S. Navy pilots stationed on the USS Enterprise in the Indian Ocean. They fly the formidable F-14A Tomcat. During an intense encounter with two hostile MiG-28s, Maverick locks onto one, while the other locks onto his wingman, Cougar. Maverick manages to drive off the enemy, but Cougar is so shaken that Maverick has to defy orders to escort him back to the carrier safely. Shaken by the experience, Cougar resigns his commission, leaving his spot at the elite Naval Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun, open. Maverick and Goose are sent in his place, despite a reprimand for disobeying orders.

On the eve of their first day at Top Gun, Maverick tries to woo a woman at a bar, only to discover the next day that she’s Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, an astrophysicist and civilian Top Gun instructor. Intrigued by Maverick’s bold flying maneuvers, Charlie becomes interested in him.

In his first training mission, Maverick breaks a major rule by flying below 10,000 feet to defeat instructor Lieutenant Commander Rick “Jester” Heatherly. He and Goose also buzz the control tower despite explicit instructions not to, earning them a reprimand from chief instructor Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf. Privately, Jester acknowledges Maverick’s skill but questions his reliability in combat.

Charlie publicly criticizes Maverick’s tactics but privately admires his flying. The two begin a romantic relationship. However, Maverick’s reckless streak continues to cause friction. During a critical training mission, he abandons his wingman to chase Viper, leading to both their defeats and a lesson in teamwork.

Maverick’s rivalry with Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky heats up as they vie for the Top Gun Trophy. In a fateful training exercise, Maverick’s F-14 hits a jet wash from Iceman’s plane, causing a deadly flat spin. Maverick and Goose eject, but Goose tragically dies when he hits the canopy. Cleared of wrongdoing, a guilt-ridden Maverick considers quitting.

Seeking guidance, Maverick turns to Viper, who reveals that Maverick’s father died heroically in the Vietnam War. This revelation helps Maverick regain his confidence. He graduates from Top Gun and congratulates Iceman, the Top Gun Trophy winner.

Soon after, Maverick, Iceman, and Hollywood are deployed to rescue a disabled ship in hostile waters. Iceman and Hollywood engage in a dogfight with six MiGs. When Hollywood is shot down, Maverick, despite initial hesitation, re-engages and shoots down three MiGs. Iceman takes down a fourth, and the remaining enemies retreat. The mission fosters mutual respect between Maverick and Iceman.

Finally free from his guilt, Maverick throws Goose’s dog tags into the ocean. Offered any assignment he wants, Maverick chooses to return to Top Gun as an instructor. He and Charlie reunite at a bar in Miramar, closing one chapter and opening another in Maverick’s high-flying career.
