sundance vr deals
Sundance 2026 is witnessing unprecedented deals for VR and immersive storytelling projects, with the New Frontier section breaking records through January 22-February 1 in Park City, Utah. The combination of Apple Vision Pro mainstream and Meta Quest 4 releases has investors scrambling to buy spatial computing experiences that combine AI, mixed reality, and stocked storytelling. More than 25 VR productions have raised over $150M+ in investment, double what 2025 will receive, with such studios as A24 and Netflix restructuring to the metaverse. Such features as artificial intelligence-based choose-your-own-adventure documentaries and haptics-based horror are also featured, as tech giants seek to capitalize on the fallout of Hollywood strikes. It is an indicator of immersive media becoming a niche power to a commercial one.
New Frontier is dominated by VR immersive projects, which have 30+ entries, including social VR films that enable people around the world to interact through shared spaces in real-time.
VR narratives are becoming the stories of the record, with deals being done on platforms such as Oculus and even in spatial streaming services, beating out the traditional indies.
