According to dentists, eating ice can harm your teeth. Eating ice can cause chipped or fractured teeth. Chewing ice leads to more sensitivity to hot and cold things. Tooth enamel is made up of very small structures like rod shapes that contain microscopic crystals. Ice is also considered a crystal. So when two crystals are hardly pressed together one of them will break. Dentists have suggested that chewing hard substances can cause tooth microfractures. If you chew ice repeatedly you may witness several small fractures on the surface of your tooth. The fractures are not noticeable to the naked eye but under high magnification and lights the fractures and the surface can be seen.

With iron deficiency the red blood cells cannot carry the much-needed oxygen to the brain because of this people with iron deficiency chew ice to trigger an effect that sends more oxygen to the brain.

Another reason for chewing ice is Pica. Pica is a type of eating disorder. People suffering from Pica eat non-food items which include ice, chalk, or even dirt. Pagophagia is a type of pic where people love to eat snow or ice.
