State of Emergency Declared as Hurricane Debbie Pummels Carolinas and Florida

Hurricane Debbie continues to disturb Americans and because of this state of emergency has been declared in Carolinas, Florida and an emergency alert has also been declared in Georgia.

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to make landfall early Thursday, bringing even more rain to South Carolina’s already saturated coastline. This situation is raising serious concerns about flash flooding. Forecasters predict an additional 9 inches (23 cm) of rain could fall in parts of eastern South Carolina on Thursday, with some areas potentially seeing total rainfall exceed 25 inches since Debby began impacting the southeastern United States on Monday.

Although Wednesday saw a slight decrease in rainfall. Rich Bann is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He warned that Thursday would be a different story. “Moisture has surged back into Debby,” Bann explained, noting that the storm gained strength while lingering over the Atlantic Ocean off Georgia and South Carolina. “As Debby moves inland, the risk of heavy rain and flooding will increase.”

Hurricane Debby could bring at least 4 inches of rain to areas from Virginia to Pennsylvania.

Areas of New York and northern Vermont may be affected over the weekend.

Because of this critical situation around six people have lost their lives in Florida and Georgia.

The National Water Prediction Service has forecast that seven rivers could reach major flood levels before the storm subsides. Officials are also on high alert.
