A Russian passenger flight carrying 50 onboard crashed near a remote spot in the far east region of Amur with initial sightings reporting no immediate survivors, confirming yet another deadly airline devastation in recent months.
The aircraft, a twin-propeller Antonov-24 operated by Angara Airlines reportedly had 46 passengers and 5 crew members including 5 children was headed to the Tynda airport. The crash site was near the destination when the aircraft was on its usual path of initiating a go- around landing procedure.
A rescue helicopter spotted the crash spewing smoke and no sight of survivors, Reuters reported. Headed from the city of Blagoveshchensk, the flight lost signal from the radar during the go-around landing procedure around 1.00 PM local time and 4.00 PM GMT.
The fuselage was found only 16 km from the Tynda Airport in a remote mountain slope. Videos from the crash site show a dense forest area covered in smoke and wreckage with no site of any survivors.
Amur region’s civil defence agency said, “At the moment, 25 people and five units of equipment have been dispatched, and four aircraft with crews are on standby”. Rescuers and local volunteers reported to TASS news agency that the dense forest region makes it difficult to send out immediate responders
The plane crashed while attempting a second landing as it approached the Tynda airport, Russia’s Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor’s Office said. “While approaching Tynda Airport, the aircraft went around for a second landing, after which contact was lost. The circumstances are being investigated,” it said. Although there was no immediate comment made on what caused the crash.
