Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Drone Strikes Cause Disruptions in Kazan, No Casualties

The airport in the Russian city of Kazan reopened on Saturday. This airport reopened on Saturday after a temporary closure due to a Ukrainian drone attack, that was announced by the Russia’s aviation watchdog.

This attack targeted a residential complex and other areas of the city. Which is located approximately 500 miles (800 km) east of Moscow. Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that the city was struck by three waves of drones between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. local time (0440 to 0620 GMT). The Ministry confirmed that six drones were neutralized—three destroyed by air defense systems and three others brought down using electronic warfare measures.

An unverified video on the Baza Telegram channel showed a drone hitting a high-rise building. The crash caused a large explosion. According to local authorities ‘fortunately no casualties were reported’. 

The mayor of Kazan announced on Telegram that all mass events which are planned in the city would be canceled for the weekend. And temporary shelts will be provided to the affected peoples.

Maria Zakharova, The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman from Russia condemned the incident. She called  this hit on civillians a “real military defeats.”

According to Rosaviatsia  other airports including those in Izhevsk and Saratov also briefly halted flight operations as a precaution but normal operations resumed later.

The attack highlights the growing tension and ongoing conflict in the region of Ukraine and Russia.  Officials and authorities in Kazan are monitoring the situation, they are asking civillians to stay alert!
