olivia hussey, iconic 'romeo & juliet' star, passes away at 73 a legacy remembered
Hollywood actress of most renowned movie Romeo & Juliet (1968) Olivia Hussey has died on December 27, 2024. She played the role of Juilet in the movie.
This sad news was shared on her Instagram account by her family. Her family described her as a person of warmth, wisdom, and kindness. According to the statement by family “Olivia’s life was full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality, and her love for animals”.
She is survived by her husband, musician David Glen Eisley, her children Alex, Max, and India, and her grandson, Greyson. The family expressed their gratitude for the support and prayers, asking for privacy during this difficult time.
Olivia Hussey was born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After the time Hussey moved to London as a child and began her acting career at 13. She rose to international fame at just 16 when she starred in Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo & Juliet. The film was a super hit for casting actors close to the ages of Shakespeare’s characters. The movie became a box office hit and launched Hussey into stardom.
“It was overnight superstardom, and I wasn’t prepared for it,” Hussey said in an interview while promoting her memoir, The Girl on the Balcony.
After this success Hussey appeared in many notable roles, including Mary in the 1977 miniseries Jesus of Nazareth, the horror classic Black Christmas (1974), and the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It. She also appeared in Psycho IV: The Beginning and had a guest role in Boy Meets World. Her final film appearance was in Social Suicide in 2015, and she retired from acting in 2016.
Reflecting on her life and career, Hussey once shared, “I regret not taking on more challenging roles, but raising my three children was more important to me than my career. I’m proud of a few roles I’ve done, and I’m happy with my life overall.”
Her daughter, actress India Eisley, described her mother as “resilient and strong” with a firm sense of self. “She taught my brothers and me to stay true to ourselves, especially in an industry where opinions can be overwhelming,” India said in 2018.
