Prioritizing Safety: The Importance of Stricter Regulations for Motorcycle Taxis in the Philippines

With the 19th Congress ending soon, the need to regulate the motorcycle (MC) taxi industry becomes more critical. As the motorcycle taxi emerges as a solution to traffic and public transportation shortages, the safety of passengers and the well being of motorcycle riders should take center stage in congressional talks.

Recently the Senate issued a warning regarding riders who drive without professional licenses. The concern is made apparent by the call for increased regulations including extensive screening and safety protocols. A study in Metro Manila identified that almost half of road crash victims in 2022 were motorcycle riders pointing to a critical need for safety protocols.

The industry has to be regulated not only to save lives but also to ensure riders’ labor standards are maintained. Platforms have to ensure their drivers are licensed, trained and paid decently. Serious sanctions have to be applied to riders and platforms that breach safety and labor laws.

The transport network vehicle service (TNVS) industry including the motorcycle taxi plays a crucial role in the country’s national economy by producing billions in GDP. Therefore, establishing a balanced regulatory structure that guards stakeholders and promotes industry development is imperative. With such actions the motorcycle taxis are able to continue to serve commuters safely, responsibly and efficiently.
