Srilankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved the parliament on November 13, 2024 at the midnight and announced that the snap election will be held on November 14, 2024. The shocking decision of President was implemented to prove the majority of his government which had an alliance with JVP (Janatha Vimukhti Peremuna) party, who secured 42.3% of votes during the parliamentary election that took place a few months ago. The NPP government found hassle to fulfill their promises of reducing tax, freeing the public revenue tax.
The Landslide Win
The results which is coming out early this morning proved that the conviction of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake doesn’t go in vain instead his NPP party wins the 62 percent of the votes. They are leading in every constituency with 97 seats on their hand out of 225 member parliament.
President Anura Dissanayake came into the power in September when the former incumbent Gotabaya Rajapaksa was drive out. He promised to recover the country from the melting economic and fix the unfair levied taxes. But the wobbling parliamentary majority again forced Dissanayake to dissolve the government.
He gave a hope speech on November 14, 2024, Thursday,
“We believe that this is a crucial election that will mark a turning point in Sri Lanka. At this election, the NPP expects a mandate for a very strong majority in Parliament”
“I expect a new country, a new government that is friendly towards the people. Previous rulers deceived us. We need a new set of rulers who will develop the country,” said Milton Gankandage, a 70-year old pensioner told the AFP.
