PM Modi’s US Visit: Quad Summit, Key Diplomatic Meetings on the Agenda

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the United States for a three-day visit from Sep 21 to Sep 23. This visit will be focused on high-level meetings and the upcoming Quad Summit. 

PM Modi shared an official update by using their X account: 

There are few notable things that will be in focus during this visit. Key Updates: 

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden will address a range of issues during their meeting in US. This will include the ongoing Ukraine conflict and regional activities by China.

“President Biden will hear firsthand from Prime Minister Modi about his recent visit to Ukraine, and they will also discuss China’s actions in the region,” Sullivan stated. “The conversation will cover both China and Russia.”

Strengthening Quad Ties Amid China’s Aggression

As tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region experts suggest India lean towards stronger security cooperation with the Quad alliance, which includes the US, Japan, and Australia. 

According to Reuters Lisa Curtis who is an expert from the Centre for a New American Security said , “China’s recent maritime aggression could be prompting India to become more open to the idea of Quad security cooperation.” This shift comes as India balances its role in regional security while staying out of formal military alliances.

India’s Domestic Development to Shine at UN Summit

Prime Minister Modi’s visit isn’t just about defense and security. He will also spotlight India’s domestic progress at the United Nations’ Summit of the Future. 

Parvathaneni Harish who is India’s UN Ambassador said to PTI in an exclusive interview- Modi’s message will focus on India’s development story, aiming to showcase the nation’s rapid advancements on the global stage  .

Expansion of Maritime Pact Expected at Quad Summit

According to the White House, the upcoming QUAD summit will focus on expanding the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness initiative from Southeast Asia to the Indian Ocean Region.

The leadership summit is set to start on Saturday in Wilmington, Delaware, and this will witness the participation of global leaders. As reported by a senior administration official to news agency PTI  a formal announcement regarding the expansion is expected to be made!

After all the meetings, the US President Joe Biden is set to host an “intimate dinner” for the Quad leaders, strengthening ties with India, Japan, and Australia through personal diplomacy during this pivotal summit.
