net positive energy ai wef
The field of artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining momentum but the increasing electricity demand is causing a major concern. Also with reference to observations made by the World Economic forum, data-centre power consumption worldwide may increase by almost threefold by 2035, putting strain on grids and climate commitments. To overcome this, the WEF is advancing to Net-Positive Energy in which the AI systems generate more benefits of energy savings and efficiency than the power that they use. The strategy is aimed at repackaging AI implementation to facilitate sustainable growth without straining energy infrastructure instead of halting innovation.
The Net-Positive energy plan focuses on the efficient design of AI, smarter applications in industries such as grids and cooling systems, and demand management to prevent the Jevons Paradox. Examples of AI reduction of energy consumption are already present in real life, which makes this transition real and needs to be made as soon as possible.
