Presidents’ Day at the Source: Free Entry & Special Tours at George Washington’s Estate

For history enthusiasts, there is no better way to observe the holiday than by attending Mount Vernon events directly at the source. George Washington estate will be opened to the public, free of charge, on February 16, 2026, to give the people a chance to explore the place where the first American president worked and spent his time. The occasion known as Free Admission Day can be considered a unique chance to visit the mansion, the recently restored bedchamber, and the first floor, which were open to visitors again by the end of 2025.

Experiencing Historic Virginia Tours and Military Demos

The day is packed with immersive historic Virginia tours and demonstrations. One of the family showcases is the tactical firing demonstration and this is followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of Washington by the Commander-in-Chief-Guard. Tourists also have an opportunity to go back in time at the Continental Army camp and learn how the soldiers lived in the Revolution.

To secure your spot for this George Washington birthday celebration, arrive early. Free admission is given out onsite on a first come, first served basis and queues usually form in front of the gate as early as 9:00 AM.
