leonardo dicaprio prolific star green mission
Despite skepticism around celebrity climate campaigning, Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio‘s decade-long commitment to climate action – in the form of philanthropy, film, diplomacy and more efforts – has cemented his role as one of the most influential climate voices.
Just months after Titanic made him a global sensation, DiCaprio founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998. The organisation has been part of multiple important projects. In 2010, it donated $1 million to support tiger conservation in Nepal.
DiCaprio also has a substantial social media presence. He uses his online platforms to educate and mobilize. His accounts consistently highlight some of the most pressing issues of our time, including deforestation and ocean protection.
Leonardo DiCaprio is on a mission to make climate science more accessible to the public. In his 2016 Oscar acceptance speech, he famously said: “Climate change is real … It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species.”
“Let us not take this planet for granted,” he noted at the time. The actor has been using social media as a climate megaphone and multiple ceremonies as platforms for climate campaigning. This is great as people listen to DiCaprio.
In 2016, Leonardo DiCaprio also attended the historic climate conference in Paris. The summit resulted in the establishment of the Paris climate accords. It is great to see celebrities like DiCaprio, Heidi Klum and Cate Blanchett campaigning for climate action.
