Julian Assange Walks Free After Plea Deal with US in Espionage Case

On Monday, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange walked out of Belmarsh prison after agreeing to a plea deal with the US. He is set to plead guilty to a single criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defense documents. This agreement has brought an end to his prolonged imprisonment in the UK and allowed him to return to Australia.

After spending five years detained in the UK while fighting extradition to the US, where he faced charges for revealing military secrets, Assange was finally granted bail by a London court. The government of the United Kingdom approved his extradition in June 2022, but the plea agreement has now changed the course of his legal fight.
