jonny evans retires after illustrious career with manchester united and premier league success
The 37-year-old veteran defender Jonny Evans is retiring from professional football after recently leaving Manchester United. Because of his calmness, sound decisions and strong performances, Evans leaves the game after making 643 appearances and hitting 30 goals for both club and country. As well as winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League at United, Evans also contributed a lot to West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City. It all returned to his roots when he rejoined Manchester United in 2023 and his guidance pulled the team through tough times to clinch the FA Cup.
Jonny Evans got his start at Manchester United when he was carefully trained by Sir Alex Ferguson in the club’s academy. Many times, Evans was brought in after Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić, but he ended up starring in 241 games and winning 12 trophies, three of which were Premier League championships and another was the 2008 Champions League.
Despite leaving United in 2015, Evans reached his peak at West Brom and Leicester City, soon becoming a top-ranked defender in the Premier League. He was a key figure in Leicester’s famous FA Cup win in 2021 which made Ole Gunnar Solskjær, former manager of United, think Evans deserved to be playing for United.
In 2023, Evans was brought back to Manchester United to give depth in preseason matches. But difficulties with injuries and his dependability ensured Erik ten Hag played him regularly, giving him a total 15 starts in the Premier League in the 2023–24 campaign. United won the FA Cup final in 1957 with Ted’s help and he was once more indispensable.
His skills reading the game, managing situations and controlling the ball remained intact even as he slowed down. Rio Ferdinand said: “When given a task by the manager, he performed it at the highest level.”
