How Many Viewers Did Iranian Cinema Have Last Year?

In an incredible Event, Iranian film has broken a 24 year box office audience record, reaching 28.6 million cinema attendees through the end of December 2024. This is the highest figure ever since 2000 and has set the scene for increased growth with the box office revenues also growing to a whopping $200 million. The performance of the industry in its incredible comeback demonstrates the sector’s capacity for attracting big crowds despite economic downturns and changes in screening policies.

One of the major reasons for this success has been the extensive range of films in various genres like comedy, drama, social and children’s films. The top grossing films of the year like Haftad Si and Texas 3 selling over 10 million tickets and with combined box office earnings of 500 billion tomans. These two movies alone made a substantial contribution to the rise in market share of the major producer Ebrahim Amiri from 26% in 2023 to 30% in 2024.

The increasing popularity of children’s movies was another highlight of the year. Movies such as City of Cats 2, Shangoul and Mangoul and Babi The Hero earned 126 billion tomans and almost 2.8 million viewers, indicating a change in audience preferences and a greater emphasis on animated films in Iranian cinema.

But the year was not without its complications. Reforms like the elimination of half price days and increasing ticket prices later in 2023 caused box office sales to decline over the winter months with weekly box office revenue dropping from 50 billion tomans to 30 billion.

In spite of all the obstacles, the future of Iranian cinema is bright particularly for the upcoming screenings in 2024, which are likely to be viewed by even greater numbers of people and possibly set new records.
