Houston Power Outage Impacts Over 150,000 Residents Over Severe Overnight Storms

Major thunderstorms raged overnight in the Houston area on Monday and Tuesday, with many houses experiencing power outages. With lightning, heavy rain and strong winds hitting several counties, more than 150,000 residents faced a morning without power. CentralPoint Energy Texas said they had significant difficulties delivering power as quickly as possible. Since there were storm watches up until 5:00 am Tuesday, all residents were told to avoid touching downed power lines and call for help about any outages.

Thousands Without Power Across Houston and Surrounding Counties

At the time of the largest interruption, CenterPoint said 120,259 clients were without electricity and Entergy reported there were 31,175 customers without power. With this, the number of outages climbed above 150,000 in areas such as Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery and Brazoria.

Powerful thunderstorms that hit the region Monday night led to the outages. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for over 15 counties until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. It was announced in Waller, Liberty, Polk and Wharton counties that weather conditions could be dangerous and could cause damage, threatening safety.

What to Expect and How to Stay Safe

Reports from the weather office suggest Tuesday will start with morning storms and continue with a very warm and humid afternoon, reaching about 90°F. The unsettled weather is forecast to continue all week, including scattered thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday and sometimes thunderstorms into the weekend.

Utility companies are urging all residents to be careful and make sure they have important information.

  • Do not touch or get near power lines that have fallen to the ground.
  • Go to either Centerpoint Energy’s or Entergy’s outage map on their website to report an outage.
