Trump vs. Biden: Major Points from the First Debate

This was the first time when President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump went head-to-head in a closely contested election debate in America. Both are strong personalities and controversial legacies, clashed on numerous issues during the 90-minute live debate by CNN. The debate was full of personal attacks and discussions on heated topics in America like the economy, immigration, and democracy.

Here we are with the highlights of the debate between Trump and Biden:

1. Economic Clash Was the Central Issue of the Debate

The economy took center stage during the Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Both candidates presented different views on this issue.

Biden claimed he inherited an economy in a crisis and blamed Trump for enriching the wealthy through tax cuts. Trump countered and accused Biden of mishandling the economy and causing inflation.

“We had the greatest economy in the history of our country,” Trump boasted, while Biden argued he revived an economy devastated by Trump’s pandemic response.

2. Immigration and Border Control- A heated issue

Immigration was another hot topic of the 2024 Presidential election. Citizens of America are not so happy with Biden’s stand on this issue and Trump took advantage of this issue. He repeatedly attacked Biden’s border policies.

Trump accused Biden of opening the borders of America to criminals and terrorists without evidence. Biden was frustrated with this bombarding question by Trump and he labeled Trump a liar and criticized him.

3. Addressing Age Concerns- An issue for US Presidential Candidates

Age is another factor that is important to take care of in any leadership role. Biden is 81 and Trump is 78 years old. They both were questioned about their age and ability to lead.

Biden faces more scrutiny on this issue deflected by highlighting his past achievements. Trump said that he had passed a cognitive test and challenged Biden to do the same.

With these topics, a lighter discussion was about fitness and fluency.

4. Personal and Legal Attacks- A Part of Debate between Republican and Democratic

The debate was a golden opportunity for both Republicans and Democrats to raise their voices and attract the attention of citizens. Joe Biden used it again to raise questions about legal troubles and pathways. He expressed concern over court cases and personal attacks.

5. Biden’s Performance Scrutinized

We must say that Joe Biden’s performance was uneven. We know voters are concerned about his age. His voice was strained and he sometimes lost his thoughts, especially during discussions on the economy and inflation.

Trump took advantage of these moments to question the mental fitness of Joe Biden.

Overall the first presidential debate of 2024 was a fiery encounter, setting the stage for the next meeting in September and leaving voters with much to consider as they head toward the November election.
