Hidden Skate-Park Battles in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene

The underground skate subculture in Fort Greene presents underground games in DIY venues such as Commodore Barry Park and Golconda Skateboard Park (Fat Kid) in defiance of Parks Department prohibitions. The recycled benches in Commodore Barry are the location of ledge tricks, even though summons risk-producing skaters go to North Elliot Place to get soft-ground manuals. The ledges in Fort Greene Park attract large crowds to the high gaps, tiring the sessions under DeKalb Avenue. Golconda, managed by BQE, developed out of DIY to an official bowl that was 18k sq ft, and drove freestyle battles. These crude fights run the risk of arrest for the local crews; the ideal weekends are after dark. Where Quartersnacks leads the way on maps, community is pushing legal spots under gentrification.
