French Open 2023: Novak Djokovic beats Casper Ruud to win his 23rd Grand Slam title
The latest French Open final on June 11 saw Novak Djokovic beating Casper Ruud to win his men’s-record 23rd Grand Slam title with a 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 victory. The 36-year-old Serbian broke a tie with Rafael Nadal for the most major singles trophies in the history of men’s tennis.
With 24 magnificent victories, Margaret Court is the only player to hold more Grand Slams titles in singles tennis all-time, be it women’s or men’s.
Djokovic is now the only man with at least three wins in each major event. Alongside the victory on Sunday, the player also earned the 2016 and 2021 French Open titles.
Moreover, since getting his hands on the first Slam trophy at the 2008 Australian Open, the player has now grabbed ten there, three at the US Open and seven at Wimbledon.
It’s also worth noting here that Djokovic is now on his way to a calendar-year Grand Slam – winning at all the four major events in one season – something not seen since Rod Laver did so in 1969.
The Serbian was immensely close to achieving it in 2021 when he triumphed at Wimbledon, French Open, and Australian Open and also reached the title match at the US Open before Daniil Medvedev took the winning shot.
Nevertheless, Djokovic is expected to resume that rare pursuit at Wimbledon which commences on July 3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.
